During the 19th century, Bruges had several beet-sugar factories. Lighters transported sugar beets from the surrounding polder region to factories along the city’s waterways. Lighters were relatively small and shallow cargo ships to transfer goods from sea vessels to the quay and vice versa. Thanks to its shallow draft, a lighter could also navigate shallow waters and tidal channels where large seagoing vessels could not reach.
